What is the role?

The Senior Ecologist role is required to actively support the company in achieving its biodiversity requirements and commitments under London Gatwick's Sustainability Policy (the Second Decade of Change) including management of our 91ha Biodiversity Areas and seeking additional opportunities for enhancement across the airport estate. Supporting our HSE management system, construction programme and operations by ensuring compliance with relevant environmental legislation.

What will you do?

• Maintaining London Gatwick's award-winning approach to biodiversity by retaining the Biodiversity Benchmark Award with the Wildlife Trust through management of our 91ha Biodiversity Areas
• Planning and conducting ecology surveys, producing reports and communicating progress
• Delivering Wildlife Impact Assessments to support Gatwick's works programme and ensure that appropriate mitigations are implemented to mitigate potential impacts on wildlife in accordance with relevant legislation.
• Working with the operational and ground maintenance team to manage biodiversity risks and opportunities.
• Coordinating the delivery of relevant biodiversity projects, research and trends to drive continual improvement.
• Maintain relationships with partners including Gatwick Greenspace Partnership , the Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre and local conservation organisations.

Do you have what we're looking for?

• Skilled in analysing ecological data and producing clear, high‑quality reports
• Proficient in conducting ecological surveys and creating detailed maps
• Adept at carrying out wildlife impact assessments, preparing survey recommendations, developing mitigation plans, reviewing ecology reports for legislative compliance, communicating risks, identifying improvement opportunities, and overseeing on‑site ecological works
• Strong capability in managing projects from inception through delivery
• Competent in preparing and evaluating risk assessments and method statements
• Experienced in designing and delivering ecology‑focused presentations and training sessions
• Knowledgeable in conducting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments
